The Big Give Event
“The Big Give” - Assisting our Community
The Big Give is a National Movement of generosity, through which churches bless their neighbourhoods in a day of giving. Every year, Westview participates in this wonderful cross-Canada, multi-church initiative. Especially in these times… the Big Give is needed, and will be happening on Saturday June 6th.
The West Island Network (WIN) of churches, through their Community Action and Initiatives Team (CAIT) have put together two focuses that we are going to be part of. Westview’s Terrie Vorsteher is part of the CAIT team.
Here are the two important initiatives you could be part of, if you are able:
1. Big Give Food Collection:
There are so many in our West Island community who need help, in order to feed themselves, their families; this is an increasing need given the COVID-19 context.
So to assist our local food banks in meeting these needs, on Saturday June 6th between 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., you can drop off food items at the church. We will be collecting these from you in a safe self-distanced approach, at the west side entrance doors of the church - by boul. St. Charles.
The food collected will then be distributed to our local food banks for them to provide to those in need.
Here is a list of food items you can donate:
1) 1L juice (like Oasis)
2) Canned tomatoes
3) Canned tuna
4) Regular size cereal
5) Granola bars
6) Pasta sauce (we already have A LOT of pasta)
7) Other canned fish/meat (like salmon, chicken, ham, etc.)
9) Hearty soups
10) Canned legumes (lentils, red kidney beans, chick peas, etc.)
2. Big Give Senior Gift Bags (partnering with Meals on Wheels):
It is very much on our hearts and minds to care for seniors living in their own homes in isolation. This can be done by putting together small care packages. Meals on Wheels is uniquely in a place to connect and deliver these gift bags; as we show our love, respect and attention to these seniors.
Here are recommended items you can include in your gift bag:
· Cookies (store bought, not homemade)
· Note Pad and Pen
· Fruit Cups
· Bag of Candy / Chocolate
· Lipton Cup of Soup
Please drop off your gift bags at the church on Saturday June 6th between 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
We also need a few volunteers who will work in 1 hour shifts to receive the food and gift bags from people. Masks and gloves will be provided, and self-distancing approaches will be in place.
